"Potential Applications of Nano-technology and Engineered Composite Particles for Pharmaceutical and Bio Industry"

Creation of advanced particulate materials through engineering of particles is a major research focus of the New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates (NJCEP) at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The research program of the Center places emphasis on a more effective utilization of the unique properties of nano and sub-micron particles through structuring of the particulates. Such particulates have many potential applications in a variety of industries including pharmaceuticals, defense, electronics, food, cosmetics, ceramics and specialty chemicals.

This talk will provide a brief overview of the potential applications of nano-technology for pharmaceutical and bio industries. It will discuss major initiatives taken at NJIT and Rutgers University that deal with research and training of graduate students in this exciting area. The talk will also include examples of the work done by Prof. Dave and his group in handling and applications of nano-structured particulates. Topics include, handling of cohesive and nano-particles, film coating of nano-particles, coating by nano-particles for the purpose of improved functionality or changing the surface properties of carrier particles, fluidization of nano-particles in agglomerate form through application of various external agitations/forces, synthesis using supercritical fluid processing and mixing of nano-particles.

Speaker:

Rajesh N. Davé ,Director, New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering,-New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, NJ:

Dr. Davé is the founding Director of the R&D Excellence Center, New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates. His main research interests are in the areas of particle technology and fuzzy pattern recognition. His research has been supported through grants from federal, state, and industrial awards totaling over $12 Million. He is the recipient of a number of awards and honors; including delivery of the Leslie J. Ford Lecture: Dry Particle Coating – Synthesis and Characterization of Engineered Particulates with Tailored Properties, at Particle Technology UK Forum IV, The University of Leeds, Leeds, UK, April 11, 2002; K. S. Fu Award from North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS), June 1999; Harlan Perlis Award for Research, NJIT, 2001; Van Houten Award for Teaching Excellence, NJIT, 2004. He was past Chair, Area 3D, Nanoparticles, AIChE/Particle Technology Forum, and is the current Chair, Area 3A, Particle Production and Characterization, AIChE/Particle Technology Forum.
